"…the opportunity to tell this story is a relief. If there were more people [like me] out there, I wouldn’t have to feel like I’m all by myself making this decision that is so risky and so forth. … I guess it was a good time for me to have this happen because it seems that I have come in right at a time when maybe attitudes are going to shift a little bit."

This web site reports research results on the experiences of people with thyroid cancer. In this first study, we interviewed people who had a small thyroid nodule that probably or definitely was cancerous (papillary type) but was not causing any symptoms. They decided to monitor rather than have surgery or another procedure. They have shared what that experience has been like, so others could learn from them. Details about this study are in the 'phase one archive' section. This web site presents additional data not in the paper. Here is a link to the paper:

Monitoring small thyroid cancers that are not causing symptoms is a new idea in the United States. A decision to do this cannot and should not be made based on what you read here. To help people understand what this research is about, we have a section named background information. It explains a little bit about thyroid cancer and which cancers might be ok to monitor, and what it means to 'monitor' a thyroid cancer. To learn more, work with your personal health care team.

While this study focused on people who are monitoring small papillary thyroid cancers that are not causing symptoms, future work of the Thyroid Stories Project will include other experiences. If you are interested in learning about, and possibly participating in future work, please click the button to provide some basic information (should take about 1 minute).
